FIRST SUMMER
We all have fond memories that one special “first summer”…. the first summer you fell in love, the first summer you earned pocket money from a holiday job, the first summer you felt in charge of your destiny.
For me, this ‘First Summer’, was the first summer I truly fell in love with a city. I’ve always been a nomad, a contrast to most of my family, and have enjoyed living in many different parts of the world, always finding inspiration and happiness of some sort along the way. This summer I still had that thrill of experiencing something, and somewhere, new; but this was different. Was I falling in love?
My first summer living in New York City was exciting and inspiring, I felt alive! Long morning walks, before the heat of the day, forced a retreat to a shady spot, hoping for a breeze to cool the air.
There was pattern lurking everywhere, on walls, on gates, on floors, and of course, in the flush of foliage and flowers crowding anywhere warmed by the sun.
Bright pinks and yellows shone gloriously against stern backdrops of aging masonry and wrought iron. Contrast and colour seem to define this vibrant city in its warmer months and I was under its spell, I had fallen in love!
‘First Summer’ is my first full collection of repeat textile prints created since I arrived in New York. It was a summer where I felt there were not enough hours for me to sketch and refine my motifs and ideas before being assailed by a new and exciting wave of more inspiration.
All designs now available as fabric, wallpaper and wrapping paper at Spoonflower. To purchase yardage of individual designs, click the swatches below.
I hope you enjoy my ‘First Summer’ as much as I did.
